I have used a piece cut out of an aluminum pop can and wrapped it around the seal area on the crankshaft at a slight taper and then pulled it out after the seal is driven in enough to be up on the seal surface. You have to be careful not to leave any sharp edges or burrs on any of the edges that contacts the seal lip. If you are careful it will get the job done.
