East central South Dakota | Would like to buy them at 650-700 say in march or April. Current grower ration costs 1.65 per day with corn, corn silage, native hay, alfalfa and grower pellet. Could cut alfalfa out and cheapen ration up. They're getting around 7 pounds of corn but could back that a tad and still do ok. 2 acres per calf and like I said pasture is either owned or rented for approximately $40 an acre. Ideal take off weight is 850-900 lbs. Understanding that taking the calf off corn will cause a drop in gain on grass for a bit but with good grass and mineral should get good uptake and gain shortly. Water is a fixed cost wether there's cattle in these pastures or not (rural water or wells with electricity bills) so my variables are death loss, rate of gain, pasture stocking rate and pasture life and purchase time/weight/price and sale time/weight/price. |
