Cattle are herd animals and therefor want to do things as a group. So, when feeding one time a day they will all get up and eat at the same time, meaning you need enough bunk space to handle 100% of the numbers and if limit feeding this is a requirment because the timid ones will be pushed away. When on full feed you can fudge a bit on space because not all animals will come to eat at the same time. At your self feeder, How many times do you see only one animal there? Usually they will go in groups or even just as pairs with a few others just standing around close by. They also will eat more of the "fresh" feed than if they come to the bunk later and have to settle for the more "stale" feed.
