Subject: RE: Correct way to Fire your Attorney

West Tennessee
Apologies for causing confusion. I'm a CPA not an attorney. Since I'm not an attorney I am not sure what documents attorneys can/are allowed to keep. As an accountant I'm allowed to keep my own workpapers and don't have to give those to the client. Basically, the only thing I have to turn over to a client are source documents and finished products (tax returns). For me this really is never an issue. If a client did leave and wanted me to make copies of everything they brought me and everything that I produced then they would need to pay for that because they have all the originals of all of that every single time when their work is finished. I've been down that road and I'm not obligated to give them copies of stuff (at no cost) that I've already returned to them. I think attorneys' operate under different rules than what I do though and maybe have to copy everything again and give it to the client/new attorney.
