Faunsdale, AL | Problem with linking urea in feed to fertilizer value of manure is the urea in the feed will get turned into ammonia in the rumen and may be lost. Some WILL be lost, but with enough carbohudrate in there at the same time to feed the "bugs", they will use the ammonia to grow on and then in turn they are digested by the cow, but there is additonal growth in the large intestine after the cow no longer can digest, so the manure always has quite a lot of N along with the urea in the urine as Mark points out.
And again, some of the manure N will be lost as ammonia from the surface of the soil before it is absorbed into the soil and mineralized to Nitrate.
So there is a linkage between feeding urea or protein and fertilizer value of the manure, just not a direct one. | |
