The reason for the valve stem pointing up is so the side of the rim that bolts to the axel/drum is pointing down and stays clean. If you have ever taken down a tire from a truck that sees miles of gravel/mud, you will find the top full of material. Usually it is wet and when winter comes and you get a flat, if the valve stem was down, you have a rim full of frozen gravel that you can't put on the truck. I take my spare and bolt it into the box so it stays clean. Down side of this is it is the spare tire that protects your wiring in the back end from rock damage. Now all my wiring is shorting out!!
