If you don't know what you are doing and/or don't have time to do things right, you could easily lose money as well so the opportunity cost feeding cattle is nothing - on average.

Exact same thing could be said for grain farming. Just as easy to lose money making stupid mistakes crop farming as well as feeding cattle. When corn was below loan rate, there was lots of cash to be made hauling your corn to town via cattle, hogs or sheep, so it definitely works both ways. Many people have forgotten the days of LDP payments...
