If you don't know what you are doing and/or don't have time to do things right, you could easily lose money as well so the opportunity cost feeding cattle is nothing - on average.
You could also however have opportunity cost associated with that weekend night watchman position you didn't take. It can go on forever.

You have a point however that grain farmers have the opportunity to expand vertically and have a lot equipment and have residues possible available to make that happen.
