30-48", depending on soil type. Iowa State says to deep and you should put in flow control devices to retain the 1-3" water that "could " be lost in the soil profile from 3-5'in depth. Some soils with a fragipan, the tile should either be kept above it, or deep enough thet it can be removed with a ripper every several years, as needed.
We have some soils here the require deep tilage once every 4 years. Tried 15 year tillage study, one area, no till, one tilled every year,, one tilled every two years, one every four years. After 15 years, the notill yeild was 45-50 bushel less that all the rest, with no signifigant difference between the rest.
