Example: If it takes 10 amps on 120 volts or 5 amps on 240 volts. 240 volts has TWO hot wires where 120 volts has ONE hot wire, so 5 amps on each of two hot wires is the same as 10 amps on one hot wire. Think of 240 volts as two 120 volt hot wires, which it is. If you test each hot wire of a 240 volt plug to neutral or ground it reads 120 volts. If you check hot to hot it reads 240 volts.
