We have used satilite imagery to pick out sand/gravel areas to reduce pop. Gravel areas, thank you glaciers, never yield with rest of field even in a wet year and are the best place to play with reduced pops. Here varible rates on clay soils can be tricky, 2011 was wet until August, hilltops out yeilded tiled low areas for the first time in my memory. Long term, planting 36-38k in low areas and 30-34k on hills and down to 16k on gravel works. This year yellow clay hilltops crusted and reduced stands, it stayed dry and probably didn't affect yeilds. Challenge here is yield can go from 200 to zero in three feet going from clay to gravel, if gravel ridge runs diagonal and planter is wide almost have to wait for VR by row to be available for concept to work well.
