We carry one of these ( http://www.gemplers.com/product/6700/3M-Full-Face-Respirator-6000-S... ) with the ammonia cartridges in the tractor when applying NH3, always put it on when changing tanks. A coupler broke once, let out a jet like that but without the hose whipping around. I walked back with mask and gloves on, no trouble to shut off the valve.
Now, with that hose like that, I would have stayed away until it broke off.

Good safety equipment only has to be needed once to pay for itself.

Do you have the link or part number for the ammonia cartridges? Thanks

If you're going to rely on this to protect you, get new cartridges every season. A set that's been exposed to oxygen for a year just isn't going to be able to absorb as much NH3 as a fresh set. It probably won't matter most of the time, but if a hose breaks and shoots a jet into your face, you want fresh cartridges. They're a lot cheaper than new eyes or lungs.

Note: I am not saying wearing a full face respirator will make you invincible. But wearing one every time you change connect/disconnect hoses / change tanks will provide a lot of protection for your eyes and lungs. I don't mind the skin on the back of my neck getting burnt. I very much mind my eyes or lungs getting damaged, and to me it's well worth the hassle of cinching the mask tight everytime I get out of the tractor to make sure my eyes and lungs stay healthy.

just my $0.02 worth
