Gypsum, being part sulfur and part calcium, will not lower your pH. A theory on using gypsum on soils with high Mg is that the sulfate in gypsum will bond with the magnesium, form magnesium sulfate (Epsom salts), and leach out, leaving a higher percent of calcium. Not sure how anything can leach out of tight clay soils like what you (we) have, but anything is possible.
