I have a couple that were coconut oil, I believe.  Look up Big Drum Smoker, works great.  I think you could pressure wash an oil barrel really well and then burn it out and be fine.  Grind around the outside of the lid where the lid rolls over the drum(or vice/versa, don't remember) and the lid will come right off and remain airtight when you put it back on.  Paint it with high temp black paint and you are good to go.  Longevity shouldn't be a problem with low temp smoking in my opinion, but the old nh3 tanks are a good idea.  Ben
