Yes they can, and they even do better than that with discounts and shares of entities that are placed into trust and then purchased by an irrevocable trust to lock in the lower value, however it is stupid to have to pay an attorney, appraiser, and accountant a bunch of money to do this when all they have to do is raise the exemption way up there. Plus all the entities are a pain in the neck, however they are better than paying the worthless bunch of thieves that run the government any extra taxes. As far as that goes, I would rather give an attorney money than pay the taxes. People like obama will not pay the tax since they hire the attorney's to do all the tax planning, however the sad part is they want everyone else to have to pay it. Supposedly the exemption was made to now be portable, we will see how this fairs under any new tax law. Portablility is really interesting concept when the exemption is such a moving target. Gee even a stable bad tax law is better than uncertain tax law.
