Southern MN | I vote for the estate tax go to one million or even less. Sounds like that might hurt your inheritance and your business, but I just feel there are a lot of landowners out there with heirs that are not interested in farming, and those landowners are hanging onto their land until death only to allow their non-farming heirs to have a larger estate to sell after death. Keep the estate tax excemption low and farms might sell more frequently, allow more turn-over in land ownership, possibly more and new family farmers as there would be more opportunities to buy land. I'm for helping a business continue operation from generation to generation, but I think the estate tax excemption is being used more often than not to allow heirs to liquidate the business after death and reap more money than if the business is liquidated prior to death. Estate tax excemption may be good for the few it was intended for, but I feel its bad overall for the economy. | |
