Let the beard grow for about 2-3 weeks, then come back with a hair clippers with the closest plastic clip on the clippers.  It leave a uniform 1/4 inch beard that is soft and I don't think it looks bad.  I shave the lower part of the neck to bring it to a clean line on the bottom.  Cut it once or twice a week.
