Northeast Louisiana
Only if your fields are not uniform to justify straight rate. Some fields it will actually wind up cheaper on vrt and some will be a total waste on vrt. Some people use vrt to bring soil up to more uniform levels and then go to straight rate. Actually pays on vrt lime on most soils around here. For example, on a 80 acre field, you do a random sample and it calls for 2,000 lbs lime. You will put out 80 tons of lime. On grid samples, lets say you have 35 acres calls for no lime at all. That's 35 tons you save right there. Now the other 45 acres may need a ton. So, in all, you will put 45 tons out. I have done thousands of acres of lime on VRT.

Different people will have different opinions on this. This is the way I feel.
