When they first started talking variable rate fertilizer my adviser was telling me to cut N on the poor ground. I pointed out that good ground takes .8 lb n to make a bu. and the poor ground take 1.4 lb n to make a bu.We run N the same pretty much all over. Have tried to build our poorer soils over the years. The ten year average on one of my class 3 dirt farms is slightly better than one of Dad's Class 1 farms. We have had plenty of moisture the last 10 years. This year was dry and boy was his better. His best was still not better than my best but he didn't have the 0- 3 bu corn I did in places. I guess that means there is no substitute for good dirt, although the ones of us that don't have it can mask the effect some of the time.
