Faunsdale, AL | LDA can reoccur. Likelyhood of it happening depends on what technique was used to fix it.
I would guess the abomasum is still in place but with a localized abcess near the site of the stitch. The rumen gas is probably only an indicator, not the problem. Most likely problem is vagal indigestion from the abcess. Nothing to do but treat the infection, she either gets better and then you make the decision about cull or not or she doesn't get better and you can't salvage anything.
I have had a couple cows that were a chronic bloater over the years. Created a small fistula high in the left paralumbar fossa on both of them and they stayed in the herd for many years in each case. Those are the only times I have ever treated rumen gas with anything other than medical treatment for the underlying problem (grain overload, frothy bloat etc).
Not a bad thing to have a cow with a fistula available to harvest rumen fluid for drenching other cows that are off feed etc. Probably not worth keeping a cull because she has a fistula, but certainly adds value to one that's still pulling her weight anyway. | |
