One other point to mention as I spent more hours in a silage truck/trailer this year than other years. Semi trailers bring more stress and fatigue to the drivers. Our semi trailers are 40' trailers requiring more attention and skill in exiting fields as well as intersections. We noticed that the ag tractor trailers could easily maneuver the field exits and intersections than semis. Less stress allows for more hours before fatigue and we all know what happens when drivers are fatigued - accidents and mistakes. I found that at the end of a day running a semi I was completely exhausted from operating the truck in a manner that it's really not designed to do. So as alebren mentioned ag tractors shine in the 3 - 3.5 miles range. Semis work great beyond that. Thus, for us having both allows for more flexibility.
