| In the early 90's, my dad and his brother were running somewhere around 300 hereford cows. They bought the "Specter" bull from Feddes ranch in Montana. This bull was 3000 lbs and supposedly one of the best bulls in the country. Well, we bought him when he was about used up, we had to take him to K-State vet to work on his feet, I remember. He had really big calves, and the daughters that we kept out of them had foot problems, too and milked poorly. My dad recently bought a Hereford bull that came from the Dakotas. He looks really fat, but when he comes in from the pasture, he still is in great condition. It takes a lot of starving to thin that bull. Canadian cows are just really big, so they should have big calves.
It's funny when cattle prices were low a few years ago, people went to smaller cattle, but now with the higher prices they want big cows again. | |
