I had a 96 chevy with 350, wife has a tahoe with the 5.3. Both great engines. The 350 has more low end torque, the 5.3 is fast at higher rpms.
I would go with the late 90's with 350, get exhaust, cold air intake and programmer and leave your buddy in the dust.
Currently have a 2006 F150 with 5.4. Runs fine but the 350 or the 5.3 would take it.....
