Central Nebraska | I'm lucky enough to be supported by my parents and grandparents. I get to use a lot of their equipment in exchange for labor. That's one way for a young guy to get started. I also have landlords that are really understanding and want to work with a younger farmer. They share rent to me instead of cash rent, so I don't have to borrow as much money to farm. I really appreciate that they are excited to have a young guy farming their ground, so if a younger person can find a few people like that, it will help them get started, also.
As 3w farms says, another way is older equipment. I could buy a 4840, 7300 Deere planter, cultivator, hiller, 8820, 8 row corn head and 25' bean head for what some guys will spend on their 2nd or 3rd tractor. It's still a good chunk of money, but it can be done. I have a lot of respect for the guys that run older, clean equipment. Around here, those guys also seem to have a lot of paid for land. It's kind of the model that I want to follow. | |
