I can help you some on the backgrounding-
Benefits for backgrounding over finishing is
you don't have to have as high of energy feed,as you don't want the calves gaining much more than 2.5lbs per day as feedlots don't like buying fat calves.
-the smaller the calves are the more energy and protein they need. But its only for a short time when they are not eating that much feed.
