Hastings, Florida | You wait until the time is right. Just like finding a soul mate, you will know it when it comes along. There is no suggested length of time in my book.
I have sometimes found another 'best friend' in a few weeks, sometimes longer.Much longer. Just cannot plan it out.
After 15 years I lost my little doxie [ weiner dog ] last October to old age, have not replaced her yet. Never will be able to, but I did find 2 older dogs who were about to be sent to the pound, and brought them into our family. They were very grateful, but are not the type dog I want.
I will get another dachsund when I see one that I think will be a good friend, but that may be tomorrow, or next year. You never know.
