I grid sample every year. A few years ago I drilled wheat into corn stock ground that was gridded. So we variable rated the N on in the spring. Worst wheat I had that year. One thing about wheat its roots won't go down and get the N like corn will. Now I put on a blend of 20 lbs. N and 60 lbs. Phos. dry with the seed in the fall and come back with 100 lbs. N in the spring. Works very well.
