Subject: Is a salt chlorinator a good idea?

We have a small in ground pool, less than 20,000 gal, and have been looking at a salt chlorinator. They are about 900 (Hayward) and I could install it. Water quality is supposed to be better and I agree chlorine tablets are are expensive($80+ a pail at Costco). Just wanted to hear anyone else's experience before I get too deep in this. It is a liner pool and we are in SC. We use a lot of chlorine (2 Pails a year) to keep the water clear and we have friends who say this system is easier and better. Thanks in advance!
