Don't mark with a pencil, make a precise mark with a knife.

I did that one day visiting a furniture maker's shop. I marked. he cut, and the miter cuts were perfect as can be seen at Hickory Park. Those miters were on the moldings holding the glass in the doors.

Then I helped him carry the doors to his truck and instantly wished I hadn't tried to carry one end, they must weigh 300 pounds each.
