Cut, then nibble to exact length. Easiest way I have found to trim a small amount off of a piece is to lay it on the miter saw, with the saw off slide the piece very gently against the lowered blade. Then while holding the piece firmly in place, raise the blade, start the saw and make the cut. With a little practice you can shave off amounts equal to a piece of paper.
