We have ran two Martin spaders per row since '01 and the only time I've seen them ball up is if you are running in the rain trying to finish a field up or something.  Also once in a great while if you are planting into weedy conditions in the morning and there is a really heavy dew they will ball up some but not enough to cause problems.  Under normal field conditions I've seen them run through standing water and not ball up.
