I ran mine for several years without additional weight after taking off the gauge markers. Noticed the same thing as you but when I checked the seed depth, it was always correct and I seemed to have about the same amount of pressure on the gauge wheels on the wings as on the center. I did have heavy row cleaners mounted on the row units. I finally did add some weights a couple years ago.
