twraska - 3/4/2012 07:58 Pistons together? I've never seen such a crank on a JD. Do you have a picture you care to post? I you go thru the trouble of getting the pistons to be together, why fire them at the same time and not 360 from each other? How do you keep the balance? The old Rumley's had the pistons together and they rocked back and forth like a baby cradle, I can't imagine the shaking if the RPMs were up like the G in the video!

You really won't ever see one either! Most guys won't share stuff like that but I would if I had a picture.  I don't 100% understand it all yet because I'm fairly new to the concept of 360 cranks but here is my take on it right or wrong. With two pistons firing there is that much more force throwing the crank back and that much more force to keep it spinning. Not to mention it fires more evenly than regular two cylinder does. The balance is kept by large counterweights on the side of the crank opposit to the journals. It's also a good idea to run a large steel flywheel like the G in the video pictured because it provides more inertia to keep the crank spinning and it will not crack like cast flywheels will. If don't properly a 360 two cyldiner with run just as smooth or even smoother than a 180 two cylinder. The G in the video is actually one of the smoothest running 2 bangers you will find around!
