I think the hp had something to do with keeping under the tier 1 emmissions. A 1994 or 95 has 180hp and 1996 model is still a non emmision motor and they could do that by turning down the hp by 6 horsepower. I am not sure however but believe a 2344 is probably a tier 1 emmission motor. I do not know how many acres you plan on going across or what crops but my father went from a 1640 to a 1660 and likes the extra grunt and weight of the 8.3. The 44's could maybe be had for less because of the smaller motors though. Buy as new of one as possible to get as many upgrades as you can!
