Do a little research on ratios. Depending on what you want to use it for the ratio may be important. Price also reflects from the ratio. My understanding is if you have a 12:1 ratio it means at 12 inches of distance it is reading a one inch circle. Now if you're shooting radiant heat tubes in a 18 foot shop you're about ten feet away, which means now you're measuring a ten inch circle. Generaly the higher the ratio the better for long distances. A lower ratio would be good for close quarters work. I bought mine at O'Reilly's Auto Parts store for $65 and it has a 10:1 ratio. Joe
