The bending strength of a beam is proportional to its fiber stress limit, to the width, and the cube of the height.

E.G. a 12 x 4 is 1.687 times as strong as an 8x8 using 3/4 the wood. A 16 x 4 would be 4 times as strong as an 8x8 using the same amount of wood, presuming FULL dimension timbers.

There are handbooks with data, like a wood structures handbook and I have them here somewhere. But I'm unwilling to take on the liability of such a computation which is outside my proven expertise. I've designed for myself and then had it checked by registered structural engineers who gave me a quick education why my schemes were not workable. A good structural engineer should be able to compute your needs for a one hour minimum fee.
