I think the japanese small displacement engine cars and trucks changed reliability forever. They were more reliable then anything america made at that time. They had higher standards for production and higher tolerances for fit. That was a good lesson for our industries because a car going over a 100,000 without engine work of some kind was a rarity in the 60's. Look at the new ecoboost v-6 ford pickup that is using twin turbos and high technology to gain more power then a big V-8. Porsche perfected low displacement powerful machines that were reliable and it went worldwide. For fuel and emissions low displacement engines are the rule not the exception. The biggest gain in engine toughness is the perfection of metals in the engine. We didn't have the ability to make aluminum engines in the 70's that didn't warp.
