Fallow syndrome results from not having anything growing for an extended period and then the beneficial soil fungus dies off. The fungus colonizes living plant roots and makes phosphorus more available, and it takes a few weeks for it come back, meanwhile the corn will look purple. If the weeds were thick, then there should be no fallow syndrome.
