| Ring gear and pinion set are same in power shift 46 and 48. Final drives are different with the 48 having a greater reduction ratio. The two gear set in the reduction gear compartment where your park paw and transmisson disconnect are located have a different ratio and make the differential carrier run faster in the 48. Setting the conepoint dimension, bearing preload and checking drag torque on the pinion shaft is the most difficult part of the job. Setting the differential preload and backlash much easier. Make sure your burned 48 parts are perfect before tearing the 46 down. Just to let you know there are many of these tractors with a little pitting on the pinion shaft out there. If the ring gear is perfect I might be inclined to just run the old girl as is. Also in many years of looking in these rear ends it's most often seen in units NOT using Hy-Gard oil.
