It will also help if you plant early or into cold soils. Secondary insects like to come along a take a bite out of the seed while it is laying in the cold, wet soil, not doing anything for a week or more. This injury can lead to secondary diseases infecting the seedling, maybe not killing it, but maybe affecting vigor and eventually yield.
