East Palestine, Ohio (Columbiana Co.) | When we were milking cows and the bulk of the forage was haylage, it was pretty simple to get representative samples from the silo unloader.
Jump ahead 18 years and we're trying to make a dent in cash hay-straw market around here and seems like all the race track and al paca-llama and hay brokers want to know the RFV or at least the protein content of the hay they're buying, so we are going to start sampling some bales.
I'm thinking of making a core sampler by cutting the end off of a 1'' hole saw and welding it onto a piece of pipe, then weld the on the other end of the hole-saw to the pipe so I can run it with drill to pull samples out of bale centers, both round and square.
I was wondering how you other guys do this, and how many bales do you check to get your sample from each field?
Any tips, comments, or thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
