I think soil temps, soil moisture, 7-10 day weather forecasts AND soil residual N levels all have an important influence on planting date determination. For example, if the forecast shows warm weather and the soils are warm, we try to hold off, but for larger growers with lots of acres to seed we have to rely more on fuller season varieties to help protect them from spring freeze injury. The soil temp at 4" last Sunday afternoon was 74F, thats crazy for early October here in KY (its usually closer to 60F).
