My Neighbor had a home made machine he used to do that to all of his corn with. Looked kind of like a Hahn sprayer with a cutterbar on it. Strange old man he was, passed away about two years ago. I asked Grandpa about it and he said that he thought it helped it to dry down better. Only person I know of that has done that. If I remember correctly he cut the tops a little earlier than this. Maybe mid-August.
