CO₂ stimulates plant growth, and greenhouses increase CO₂ levels at times. 

I'm thinkin' I'd read leaving the residue on the ground, allows more of it to break down under the canopy the next year, so you get a some increase of CO₂ in the canopy for plant use.  Other non-volatile components will end up in the soil anyway, I'm guessing.
