nw oh | It seems like whenever we try or plan to do something like that mother nature screws it all up, hail, wind, drought, late wet planting, you name it. And then when you just about given up and throw your hands up just plant what you have left, reduce nitrogen, and not look at it until it is time to harvest it turns out like a rose. This year we have both sides of that.
We had an area in a field with increased planting rates with two different varieties. Then it sat under water three different times and stand was uneven so what are we going to learn from that. (Try not to let corn sit under water three times and buy more tile, already knew that)
Then it gets to June 4 and we are throwing the same variety in the planter for the third day in a row. Which is a variety that has been around for 5 years to begin with. We reduced the nitrogen at sidedress. Finally decided it was time to look at the field this week. It is the best looking corn we have had on the farm since we have been farming it. That is barring an early frost. So, there is still time for Mother nature to rear its ugly head.
For our area if you want a high yield plot, just tile every 20ft. That ought to do it. Because without the tile there is no use trying all of the other fancy stuff. | |
