We do this routinely in SE WI. Works out quite well. Typically some of the best yielding wheat (100+ bu) we have is following hay because we can get it planted on time in the last week or two of Sept instead of waiting for beans to come off in mid Oct. Plus it doesn't need quite as much N, usually give a 40 unit N credit.
