21% moisture was ideal. We would start at 24% but only fill it about 5 feet deep, let it dry down a few days, then add more of 21% corn filling it up. Ours was 8 feet wide. The width determined the moisture for cribbing. A nine foot wide crib had to have dryer corn or it would mold before drying down. A seven foot crib could take wetter corn, maybe 25 or 26%. The corn dried by the wind passing through the corn so the width of the crib was important. I knew a farmer that built a long high crib that was only 6 feet wide so he could crib corn in the upper 20's and not worry about spoiling or molding. This was built in the 1960's when everyone was putting up bins for shelled corn. He wasn't going to have to spend money to dry corn. It worked great for wet ear corn but it has stood empty or many years now.
