I drove across all of S MN and to Mitchell, SD on I90 yesterday on my way here to the Dakotafest show. Across S MN I was surprised to see patches of very yellow corn in places. Almost like it was too dry or maybe too wet but much of this was on high spots and they have had plenty of rain. What probably caused this was leaching of nitrogen fertilizer and in some places in some fields the corn plants just had no N when they needed it. While the corn looks good overall, I would agree that it is not going to be a bumper crop everywhere which is what would be needed for a near record national corn crop. In SD the corn looks good where they were able to get it in the ground. But there are many fields especially north of here (Mitchell) that were just not able to be planted. The James River is STILL over its banks. Jim at Dawn |
