Subject: Re: 710 or 720 plow ?

central - east central Minnesota -

Rvander1 - 8/6/2011 17:17 Chris, I copied your post so i don't loose it--that advice alone can save me a multiple thou mistake! The seed guy said yesterday to look for an International Harvester 710 four bottom plow, so I went to Seneca falls nearby where they will have the biggest used equipment auction in NY on Thursday, and I found an IH 710 that I am thinking seriously about buying at the auction this Thursday. Does this sound sensible to you, considering what I am trying to do?

There are two styles of the IH 710 plows . . . . the early style were kind of goofy the way the trailering furrow wheel was designed . . . .  I haven't used one personally, but heard guys cussing about them. I don't recall why at the moment . . . maybe had something to do with staying in the ground ? Hopefully someone with experence will chime in.
I would look for the older version of the 710 or a 720 series.
White also made a very good plow for covering heavy residue as you discribed (model 588 series). I wouldn't be afraid of either one. Criagslist is a good place to find implyments and at least get a idea on pricing. There can be big differences in price, also. Here is an example of prices of 710/720 series in our area - http://rmn.craigslist.org/grd/2470782729.html  this one has a very good pic of the trail wheel type you want to get. It's a respectable price also. Here's another example http://stcloud.craigslist.org/grd/2514706114.html

As someone pointed out - if the hydraulic hoses are in good shape and the correct fittings were on the ends, with the cylender collapsed - I wouldn't worry about the oil. Save your hundred bucks for replacement mold boards, shins, sheers and other wear parts on the plow. (Shoup parts has what will be needed, if you local dealer doesn't or is higher priced). http://www.shoupparts.com/
