Get some CIR (color infrared) aerial images of the field. You can easily assess the damage and measure how large of an area was affected. The sooner the better to do it after it has been discovered. Look at the University of North Dakota and their AEROCam aerial imagery program. They only cover the upper midwest, but the images are free of charge.
